Early Life and Education

Billy Preston popped into the world on September 2, 1946, in Houston, Texas. His folks split when he was tiny, so his mom Robbie packed their bags and headed to Los Angeles for a fresh start. Music found him early. At just three, he was already figuring out the piano by ear—no teachers, no lessons, just raw talent and curiosity.

By the time he hit ten, he was onstage backing gospel great Mahalia Jackson. He even played a young W.C. Handy in the movie St. Louis Blues. Church music became his foundation. He joined Andraé Crouch’s group and helped record some powerful gospel tracks. School? It took a back seat while music took the wheel. Those early years in LA shaped the soulful, upbeat style he’d carry everywhere.

Career Journey and Breakthrough

Things really kicked off in 1962. Billy joined Little Richard’s band and toured Europe, where he first bumped into The Beatles in Hamburg. Fast forward to 1969, and George Harrison pulled him into the Get Back sessions. Billy’s electric piano turned that track into something electric. The band loved it so much they credited the single as “The Beatles with Billy Preston”—a first for any outsider. He even joined their famous rooftop show and sprinkled magic across Abbey Road.

Going solo, Billy signed with Apple Records and dropped That’s the Way God Planned It. Then came the big moves to A&M and a string of smash hits that still get people moving: the Grammy-winning “Outa-Space,” “Will It Go Round in Circles” hitting No. 1, “Space Race,” and “Nothing from Nothing.” He co-wrote Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful,” which became a standard. On the road, he toured hard with the Rolling Stones, played on classics like Sticky Fingers, and backed George Harrison at the Concert for Bangladesh. Later he showed up on records by Eric Clapton, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and more. The guy was everywhere.

In 2021 the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame finally gave him that well-deserved induction. And right now in 2026, the documentary Billy Preston: That’s the Way God Planned It is hitting theaters and streaming platforms, letting new fans hear the full story straight from people who knew him best.

Personal Life

Billy wore his faith on his sleeve—gospel was in his bones—but life away from the keys got complicated. He kept his sexuality under wraps in a time when that was tough, especially coming from a strong church background. Addiction crept in and stuck around for years, leading to some dark periods, arrests, and rehab. In the late ’90s a cocaine charge and an insurance fraud case (involving a house fire) sent him to prison briefly, but even there he led the choir.

Health-wise, things got rough. He had a kidney transplant in 2002, but complications from high blood pressure and other issues caught up. By late 2005 he was in a coma, and he passed on June 6, 2006, in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was only 59. Friends remember a guy full of warmth and talent who fought private demons while lighting up stages. His sister later helped start the Billy Preston Foundation to support music education, keeping his generous spirit going strong.
